We’re back again with another installment of Who’s Doin It Right, where we’ll share some stellar examples of those using Salsa to make the most of their organizing efforts, working to build a community of support through fundraising, communication and advocacy.
Today's story is from Protect Our Defenders, a group leading the effort to reform the U.S. military's system for handling rape and sexual assault. Right after starting their organization in March 2011, they have been with Salsa. Since then they have built a movement in which survivors can share their stories, find support services and resources, and connect with each other. Their supporters number 20,000 strong, and along with Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-CA), are gaining national attention.
How'd they go from o to 20,000 supporters in less than a year you might ask? Well, put simply, they used every aspect of Salsa –email marketing, fundraising, advocacy tools, events, and supporter, volunteer and data management – and applied all the best outreach practices including producing compelling videos.
In hopes of continuing to raise awareness for their cause, Protect Our Defenders set an aggressive goal of reaching 100,000 supporters by the end of 2012. While continuing the efforts that got them to 20,000, they are also segmenting and engaging supporters who have already come into the fold through weekly communications with a call to action using online advocacy tools- engaging supporters in everything from signing a petition, writing a member of Congress or attending a fundraising walk in their community.
